Surprisingly there is very little known about White Star Line crews -- the exception being of course Titanic. While the research into this book has centred round the signatures within there is little or no mention of the crew and especially Commander Vaughan himself. Indeed for a distant relative I know little or nothing. However to help redress this I am putting down any little snippets I come across hopefully someone will add and the picture will begin to clear. Captained the RMS Olympic on her final voyage to the breakers yard in 1935 On retirement it is usual for a Commander to be presented with a ships bell and a small portion of railing. Since the Majestic had passed to other hands Vaughan was presented with a bell from the Olympic. Apparently this is in Liverpool Maritime Museum. Born in London, England. Married to Elizabeth. 1911 gave his home address as 20 Ellesmore Grove, Liscard, Wallasey Liverpool Career Details with White Star line. Ordinary Master Certificate with the number 030781 White Star's Runic - made two voyages aboard her:- 4th Officer in September 1902 3rd Officer in March 1903. White Star's Adriatic 2nd officer in 1911 (Wage was approx. £12.00 per month) White Star Line Britannic Commander -- July 8th 1932 (per Concert Program) Commander -- New York to Liverpool on Thursday December 14, 1933. Convoy Commander (Liverpool) during Second World War. D.S.C. Distinguished Service Cross. R.D. - Royal Naval Reserve Decoration - Instituted 1908 - Plain green ribbon, with white edges added in 1941 - Silver & silver-gilt - A skeletal badge with the royal cypher in silver surrounded by an oval cable and reef knot in silver-gilt, surmounted by a crown and suspension ring. Granted for 15 years commissioned service (sub-lieutenant and above) in the Royal Naval Reserve, active service in war time counting double. Bars are awarded for additional periods of 15 years. Recipients were entitled to the letters 'RD' after their name, altered to VRD since 1966. R.N.R. ret. Refers to Royal Navy Reserve retired.
